The roots of the affected plants turned brown and began to decay, with visible spider-like mycelium growing on the infected areas. The leaves of the plants showed signs of wilting, indicating a severe infection.
The pathogen responsible for this disease is *Rhizoctonia solani* Kuhn, a fungus belonging to the subphylum Basidiomycota. It does not produce spores, and its growth is characterized by dense mycelial networks. This pathogen primarily resides in the soil or on infected plant tissues, and it spreads through the growth and proliferation of its mycelium, causing damage to the roots of the host plants.
The disease tends to occur more frequently under certain environmental conditions. Seedlings grown in unsterilized garden soil are particularly vulnerable. High soil moisture levels also favor the development and spread of the disease, making it essential to manage watering practices carefully.
To control the infection, several effective methods can be applied:
1. **Soil Treatment**: Mix 5 grams of carbendazim with 25 kilograms of fine soil, and incorporate this mixture into each square meter of the seedbed before sowing. This helps to reduce the presence of the pathogen in the soil.
2. **Fungicide Application**: In the early stages of the disease, spray a 20% methyl-phenylphosphonate emulsifiable concentrate (such as Lictoria) diluted at 1,200 times. This treatment is effective in preventing further spread of the infection.
3. **Root Rot Management**: When root rot or stem rot occurs, a combination of 72.2% propamocarb hydrochloride (such as Previcur) diluted at 800 times and 50% iprodione (such as Topsin-M) diluted at 800 times can be used. This dual application helps to control the disease effectively.
By implementing these preventive and curative measures, the risk of *Rhizoctonia solani* infection can be significantly reduced, ensuring healthier plant growth and better crop yields.
