Pteris Crest, also known as Phoenix cockscomb, torch cockscomb, reed cockscomb, velvet cockscomb, broom cockscomb, and tower cockscomb, is a popular ornamental plant belonging to the genus Anopidae obtusa. Native to tropical Asia, this species is widely cultivated as a garden variety due to its vibrant, feathery inflorescences that resemble flames or combs.
As an annual herb, Pteris Crest typically grows to a height of 80 to 120 cm. Its seeds are produced in small, oval-shaped capsules that are black and glossy. These seeds mature between September and late autumn, making it an ideal time for harvesting.
Harvesting is done when the inflorescence is upright and most of the seeds have fully developed. The plants are collected, dried, and then the lower and middle parts of the flower spikes are processed by threshing and sorting to ensure quality. Storage conditions are critical for maintaining seed quality. Seeds should be kept in a cool, dry, dark, and well-ventilated area, ideally at a temperature between 15°C and 20°C. When stored properly, Pteris Crest seeds can remain viable for 1 to 2 years with minimal loss of germination potential.
In gardening, Pteris Crest is highly favored for its ease of care and long blooming period. It makes an excellent choice for flower beds, borders, and even for cut flower arrangements, adding a dramatic touch of color and texture to any landscape.
