Two simple methods to check the cylinder compression force

1. Hand Cranking Method. When manually cranking the crankshaft under engine compression, you'll notice that the upward resistance from the piston increases gradually. At the point where the resistance is at its highest, stop cranking the shaft. If the grip feels strong and requires significant effort, it indicates good compression. On the contrary, if the grip feels weak or easy to turn, it suggests poor compression. For multi-cylinder engines, this method can be used to check each cylinder individually, following the engine's firing order to identify which cylinder may have issues.

2. Smoke Test Method. While the engine is running, open the oil filler cap. If you observe a puff of black smoke coming from the cap, it could indicate excessive wear between the piston rings and the cylinder walls. This condition often results in poor compression, as the seal between the piston and cylinder is compromised. The presence of smoke during operation can also signal other internal problems, such as worn valve guides or seals, which may affect overall engine performance and efficiency.

This test is particularly useful when combined with other diagnostic methods, such as compression testing or leak-down testing, to get a more complete picture of the engine's health. It’s important to perform these checks regularly, especially in older engines, to detect potential issues early and prevent major mechanical failures.
