A recent clinical study conducted in the United States has provided strong evidence that drug-eluting stents are both safe and effective for treating heart conditions, with a reduced risk of blood clots compared to traditional bare-metal stents. These stents have been hailed as a major breakthrough in cardiac care, but they have also sparked significant debate over their long-term safety.
In September 2006, a controversial study from Belgium raised concerns by suggesting that patients with drug-coated stents faced a higher risk of stent thrombosis than those with conventional stents. However, this study was not universally accepted within the medical community.
Researchers at Columbia University recently completed a two-year follow-up study on two of the most widely used drug-eluting stents in North America—Endeavor and Cypher. The study involved nearly 1,300 patients and was presented at the American College of Cardiology meeting. According to the findings, the rate of major adverse cardiac events was 9.3% for Endeavor and 11.6% for Cypher. Both devices met current safety and effectiveness standards. Notably, no cases of advanced stent thrombosis were observed in patients with the Endeavor stent. Late stent thrombosis, which can occur more than 30 days after implantation, is a serious concern because it may lead to a heart attack.
Despite these positive results, some industry experts believe the debate over the safety of drug-eluting stents is far from over. A large-scale comparative study is currently underway in Europe, focusing on the same two leading stent models—Endeavor and Cypher. The outcome of this research could further clarify the long-term risks and benefits associated with these life-saving devices.
