In Xinjiang, the hot summer climate is not ideal for growing golden needle mushrooms. However, during the long winter, especially around the Spring Festival, there's a high demand for fresh vegetables and mushrooms due to limited availability. To address this, Flammulina velutipes—commonly known as golden needle mushrooms—are cultivated based on their low-temperature growth characteristics. The process involves preparing the mushroom bags in spring and autumn when the weather is more favorable. Once the mycelium has fully developed, the bags are stored in cold conditions—either naturally in winter or artificially in summer—and then thawed in batches according to market needs.
This method offers several benefits: First, it reduces labor requirements since fewer people are needed during spring and autumn. Second, it avoids high-temperature production issues and fills the summer gap when fresh mushrooms are scarce. Third, it allows for flexible production based on market demand, improving overall economic efficiency.
The formula for the mushroom substrate includes 80% cottonseed husk, 16% bran, 1% sugar, 1% superphosphate, and 1–2% quicklime. The water-to-material ratio is 1:1.2. Bags are prepared in March to April for spring and September to October for autumn. Materials are piled overnight and bagged the next day using 17 cm x 40 cm polypropylene bags. Each bag contains 1.2 kg of wet material, with the ends tied securely. The bags are sterilized at atmospheric pressure for 8–10 hours during the day, left to rest overnight, and then sterilized again for another 8 hours the following day. Inoculation is done in a routine inoculation room. The bags are kept in a sealed, temperature-controlled environment at 15–20°C for 25 days, resulting in a 90% yield.
During winter, from December onward, the mycelium is fully grown and stored in cold conditions. The temperature in the storage area ranges from 5°C down to -20°C without heating. Flammulina filaments remain viable even after months of storage, ensuring consistent mushroom yields. From December to March, the bags are thawed in batches to meet the demand for the New Year and Spring Festival holidays. Thawing involves placing the bags in a mushroom room where the temperature gradually rises to 10–15°C. The bags are opened, and the buds are moistened with water from the bag’s mouth. Fruiting begins after 15–20 days, and the mushrooms are harvested and managed accordingly.
For summer, the mushroom bags are made in spring. After full mycelium development, they are moved into refrigerated storage starting in May. During July and August, temperatures can reach 25–30°C, and by September, they drop to 25–20°C. This period is unsuitable for new bagging, so the mushrooms are sold from July to September. By controlling the thawing process based on market demand, the operation increases profitability. The thawing method involves moving the bags from cold storage to a basement at 10–15°C, allowing them to thaw naturally in an air-raid shelter. After 10–15 days, the bags are ready for fruiting, following the same management procedures as before.
Cold storage temperatures range from -5°C to -15°C, and the bags can be stored for over two months. Local cold storage costs are approximately RMB 5 per ton per day. For each bag, the cost increases by RMB 0.30 over two months. Despite this, the higher selling price of fresh mushrooms in summer makes the process economically viable. This strategy ensures a steady supply of golden needle mushrooms throughout the year, meeting seasonal demands efficiently while optimizing resources and reducing waste.
