In March 2007, Medtronic, a global leader in medical technology, launched an initiative to provide advanced insulin pumps to adolescents across China. This program aimed to support 30 children under the age of 18 who suffer from type 1 diabetes. The donation process began with a national essay contest where participants shared their personal stories about living with diabetes. A panel of experts and media representatives then selected the recipients.
Liu Mei, a top student from Sangzhi County in Hunan Province, became the first recipient of this program. She was recommended by Beijing 301 Hospital and CCTV, highlighting the collaboration between medical professionals and the media to identify those in need.
Medtronic has long been committed to improving diabetes care, especially for young patients. Insulin pumps are considered one of the most effective treatments for type 1 diabetes, but their high cost often prevents many families from accessing them. Through this initiative, Medtronic aims to reduce financial barriers and help children lead healthier, more active lives.
With rising rates of diabetes—especially type 2, which accounts for nearly 97% of cases—early intervention is crucial. While type 1 diabetes affects a smaller percentage of patients, it can significantly impact children's quality of life. Insulin pumps allow for continuous insulin delivery, helping manage blood sugar levels more effectively and giving patients greater freedom in their daily routines.
The program received strong support from leading diabetes experts and major media outlets in China. Discussions focused on current treatment methods, future trends, and the importance of early diagnosis and intervention for young patients.
Medtronic’s Fast 712 insulin pump, donated as part of the initiative, features advanced technology designed for ease of use and precision. It includes intelligent dosing functions that calculate insulin needs based on food intake or blood sugar levels, making management more efficient. The device also has safety features like automatic checks, alarms, and water resistance, ensuring reliability and peace of mind for users.
Its basal rate settings are highly adjustable, with a minimum of 0.05 units per hour, allowing for precise control tailored to individual needs. The user-friendly interface, including a Chinese menu and online help, makes it accessible for both patients and caregivers.
Li Bingrong, President of Medtronic Greater China, emphasized that while the company’s efforts are significant, broader societal awareness and support are essential. He hoped the initiative would inspire more people to care for diabetic children and contribute to a healthier future for all.
Medtronic also planned a series of charity events under the theme “Wings of Dreams,†including an essay contest for young patients and a campaign where every purchase of consumables would contribute to helping children afford insulin pumps.
Through these efforts, Medtronic aimed to bring hope and support to children facing diabetes, ensuring they could live full, healthy lives. Their mission continues to be driven by compassion, innovation, and a commitment to making advanced diabetes care accessible to all.
