Nearly 3 million hectares of GM crops are grown in China

On the 26th China International Conference on Storage and Processing of Agricultural Products and Food Safety held on the 26th, Luo Yunbo, Dean of the College of Food Science and Technology of China Agricultural University, introduced the status of GM food in China and its safety. President Luo said that in the world today, except for the former Soviet Union, most countries and regions have genetically modified foods. The United States, Argentina, Canada, Brazil, and China are the countries with the world's largest population. The cultivation of genetically modified crops in China grew rapidly from 1998 to 2003 and reached nearly 3 million hectares in 2003. In China's Anhui, Beijing, Hebei, Henan, Fujian, Jiangsu and other regions, genetically modified crops are planted. China's GM crop cultivation currently implements the policy of “where to declare and where to plant”, and there are both genetically modified crops planted in China. The genes imported from abroad also have genes cultivated by China. The genetically modified products in China are mainly concentrated in four areas such as cotton, bell peppers, tomatoes, and animal microbes. In particular, about 90% of cotton is now genetically modified. . Regarding the safety of genetically modified foods, President Luo Yunbo said that China is now gradually improving the testing of genetically modified foods and the formulation of relevant laws and regulations. The country has currently established 25 genetically modified testing standards and safety evaluation standards. There are currently 15 programs under development. There are 40, 42 planning and construction inspection agencies, and in 2001 the National Agricultural Genetically Modified Organisms Safety Management Office was established to specialize in the work related to genetically modified foods.
