In recent years, as the global financial crisis has intensified, China has not been spared. Many small and medium-sized enterprises and factories, both in coastal regions and inland areas, have closed down, leading to widespread layoffs. This has put immense pressure on local economies, prompting the government to implement macroeconomic adjustments. To ease the economic strain caused by the crisis, the focus has shifted toward supporting the agricultural sector. Encouraging farmers to return to their hometowns and start businesses, promoting large-scale farming, and advancing agricultural industrialization have become key strategies. Developing high-value agricultural products and fostering rural entrepreneurship are now central to the government's rural development plan.
Through financial support, tax incentives, technological assistance, human resource development, and industry policy guidance, the government is helping professional farmers grow and thrive. This initiative aims to revitalize the rural economy and pave the way for a more prosperous future. Today, raising Laoshan Black Goats has become a major income-generating project for many farmers, serving as a powerful driver for rural economic growth.
Zhou Zhengguo, a former migrant worker who returned to his hometown in Anhua County, Hunan Province, shared his experience: “This year, I had to go back home because my workshop collapsed. I started working at a seed breeding base, where we introduced 30 Laoshan black goats. I take care of them every day and come back home when it’s dark. I’m busy all day, but I want to stay active and work hard. A few days ago, I sold a batch and earned 20,000 yuan.†While feeding the goats, he spoke with enthusiasm about his new life.
Lao Zhu began raising goats in 2007, starting with 40 Laoshan black goats. Today, he has over 200 goats, with 100 being slaughtered this year. The total number of goats raised has increased by more than 50% compared to last year. “At an average price of 800 yuan per goat, I made a net profit of 80,000 yuan in six months! This fall, I plan to build another sheepfold and expand my operation,†Lao Zhu said. He added, “I used to work outside as a small business owner, but I didn’t make much money. I decided to go back home and start breeding. At first, I didn’t know much about the technology, so I spent every day in the barn learning from the base. I practiced what I learned and gradually developed my own techniques. Any small issues I could solve on my own. Raising goats is easier and more stable than working in the fields.â€
The trend of returning to rural areas has reached a peak, with aquaculture and rural entrepreneurship becoming major opportunities. The cultivation of Laoshan black goats is increasingly popular among those looking to build a sustainable and profitable future in the countryside.
