In humid conditions, these spots may look as if they’ve been scalded by hot water, while in drier weather, they turn light brown and become brittle. The base of the vines may develop spindle-shaped, water-soaked, dark green lesions that eventually cause the stem to rot completely, leading to plant death. On the fruit, dark green, circular, sunken spots appear and quickly spread, causing the entire fruit to rot, emit a foul silage-like odor, and develop dense fungal mycelium on the surface. To manage the disease effectively, it's essential to take action at the earliest signs. Farmers can use fungicides such as 50% mancozeb wettable powder diluted at 700–800 times, 72.2% propineb at 800 times, or 64% triazole-based fungicide at 500 times. Spraying should be done 3–4 times over a 10-day period, with applications made once daily. For more severe cases, the same solutions can also be used for root irrigation, applying 0.4–0.5 liters per plant. Combining foliar spraying with root irrigation can significantly improve the effectiveness of treatment. By staying proactive and following these guidelines, watermelon farmers can reduce the impact of this disease and protect their crops during the vulnerable rainy season.
