Calla lily
Calla lilies, also known as Zantedeschia or "water lilies," are elegant flowers that carry deep symbolic meaning. They are often referred to as "Guanyin" due to their graceful appearance. These flowers feature tall, straight stems with heart-shaped or arrow-shaped green leaves that have a glossy sheen. The inflorescence, called a spadix, is encased in a white spathe that resembles a horseshoe shape, giving the flower a pure and noble look. Their white blossoms symbolize purity, elegance, and spiritual clarity, making them a popular choice in floral arrangements for weddings, funerals, and religious ceremonies.
Native to South Africa, calla lilies thrive in warm, humid, and partially shaded environments. They are not tolerant of extreme temperatures—preferring a consistent temperature between 18°C and 25°C. In colder regions, they must be protected from frost. The ideal soil for calla lilies is rich in organic matter, well-draining, and loose to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to tuber rot.
Propagation is commonly done through rhizomes or offsets, typically in spring or autumn. When planting calla lilies in pots, it's best to do so from late August to early September. Place 3–4 tubers per pot, cover with soil, and keep them in a shaded area until the shoots emerge. Once they start growing, move them to a sunny location.
Watering is crucial for calla lilies. They require consistent moisture, especially during the growing season, but overwatering can be harmful. Water daily to keep the soil moist, but avoid letting the soil become soggy. Be careful not to let water collect in the center of the leaves, as this can cause soft rot. Fertilize every 10–14 days using a balanced fertilizer, applying it around the edge of the pot to avoid direct contact with the stem or leaf base. After flowering, switch to a phosphorus-rich fertilizer to enhance bloom quality.
In terms of light, calla lilies prefer shade during the early growth stage, but need full sun once they begin to flower. In northern climates, bring them indoors after the first frost, keeping the temperature above 15°C during the day and 10°C at night. Continue watering and fertilizing until the blooming period, then gradually reduce water and move them outdoors in late April. After about six months, the leaves will die back, signaling the start of dormancy. At this point, cut off the dead foliage, stop watering, and store the pots in a cool, dry place. In fall, dig up the tubers, separate them, and replant in fresh soil. When new growth appears, resume watering and fertilizing. By mid-October, move them indoors again for the winter.
