Experience of Prevention and Treatment of Diarrhea in E. coli

The E. coli disease in puppies is an infectious disease of pupae caused by E. coli. It is characterized by yellowing, white and red pupa and high mortality. It is an important disease that seriously affects the development of rabbit breeding industry. Since the implementation of the breeding area project in 2005 in our district, a total of 47 specialized rabbit breeding households have been developed with more than 5700 stocks. During September-November 2005, diarrhoea occurred in three rabbit farms in Dala and Shawen, resulting in 67 deaths, which seriously affected the enthusiasm of aquaculture. In this regard, the author to the disease rabbit farms for the diagnosis and treatment of diarrhea in rabbits, a total of 44 sick rabbits treated, survived 34, the cure rate of 77%.

1 Clinical manifestations

Rabbits with diarrhea, drainage-like or mucous-like stools, contamination of the anus, poor spirit, weight loss, abdominal distension, eye conjunctival flushing, tearing, runny nose, loss of appetite, a sudden death of a small number of diseased rabbits, short duration, high mortality.

2 Epidemiological survey

According to the author's investigation, the vast majority of puppies began to develop at 35 days of age, that is, about 1 week after weaning. At the beginning, it is black and loose stools. After one day, it becomes yellow-brown and loose stools. If the treatment is delayed, it turns into white or red watery stools, and it is odorless. The vast majority of rural households do not have strict disinfection and poor feeding and management conditions, resulting in the occurrence and prevalence of this disease.

3 laboratory diagnosis

The diseased rabbit liver, spleen, and blood were inoculated on nutrient agar plates and cultured at 37° C. for 24 hours to grow round, well-trimmed, raised, and milky white colonies. Culture colony microscopy showed Gram-negative bacilli, with slightly darker staining at both poles, initially identified as E. coli. The drug susceptibility test, the bacteria sensitive to gentamicin, more sensitive to norfloxacin.

4 Prevention

(1) Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and reasonable rehydration. Gentamicin 30,000 IU intramuscular injection, norfloxacin 1 oral, 0.9% sugar saline 25ml intravenous injection. (2) Isolation of diseased rabbits and strengthening of disinfection of housing sites. Disinfect with 0.8% "earth" disinfectant twice a day. (3) Strengthen feeding and management, disable alfalfa, use 10 ml of hot soy milk, 2 to 3 times a day.

5 Summary and Experience

With the construction of breeding communities and the increase in the price of rabbit meat in recent years, farmers’ enthusiasm for feeding rabbits is generally higher. However, in actual production, E. coli disease occurs frequently and causes the death of the pups, which reduces the production efficiency. Therefore, the prevention and treatment of colibacillosis in young rabbits should be strengthened in raising rabbits.

5.1 Immunization (1) The pre-fat vaccination of E. coli vaccine for rabbits is an important measure to control the spread and epidemic of E. coli in rabbits. For breeding female rabbits, inoculation of E. coli trivalent vaccine before mating can not only prevent miscarriage caused by vaccination during female pregnancy, but also improve the immunity of newborn rabbits. (2) The pre- and post-weaning period of the pups was a high incidence period of E. coli disease. A 20-day-old inoculum of E. coli trivalent vaccine was used. In rabbit farms where E. coli disease is spread severely, Tsai rabbits should be supplemented with E. coli trivalent vaccine 15 to 20 days after the first immunization, which can greatly reduce the occurrence of the disease.

5.2 Strengthen the management of female rabbits during pregnancy and lactation, and strengthen feeding and management. Keep the house clean, dry, and ventilated, and disinfect it 1 or 2 times per week. The female rabbit feed should not be replaced at will. Even if it needs to be replaced, it should be gradually carried out as planned. Feed more green and juicy feed to encourage the female rabbit to produce milk.

5.3 Strengthen the puerpera The rabbit vulva should be cleaned and administered with 0.01% potassium permanganate or 0.1% benzalkonium disinfectant. The newborn pups pay attention to keep warm, purify the puppies and environmental sanitation, and prevent the epidemic. In order to reduce cross-contamination, the adoption of parental care. Rabbits should eat colostrum in time and breastfeed on time. Diarrhea in puppies should be treated in time for isolation. When weaning rabbits weaning their feed plus norfloxacin and garlic water, can effectively prevent the occurrence of colibacillosis in pups.

5.4 Timely treatment (1) Early onset of intramuscular injection of gentamicin injection, each with 2 to 50,000 IU, is effective. (2) timely rehydration. Rabbits were given oral rehydration salts 2.5 to 5 ml once a day, and 1 piece of norfloxacin tablets was added. In combination with static push isotonic saline better. (3) In the onset of the disease, rabbits with swelling of the stomach can be fed with 10 to 5 ml of 10% ichthyostial fluid. (4) Obstinate chronic diarrhea was eliminated after treatment.

5.5 Treatment points In the course of treatment of the disease, rehydration is the key, timely rehydration is crucial for the prognosis of sick rabbits. In the course of this treatment, 10 puppies were severely dehydrated, resulting in treatment failure.
