The medical laser market is vast and diverse, covering everything from diagnostics to treatment. This article will explore current trends in this sector and examine how they are shaping the broader laser industry.
**Personal budgets have been shrinking**
Today, we’re seeing how the economic crisis has impacted various markets. The subprime mortgage crisis, credit crunch, and rising unemployment have shaken consumer confidence and disrupted normal market operations. In such times, people tend to cut back on expenses. Unsurprisingly, medical-related costs are among the first to be reduced. For instance, patients may delay non-urgent procedures like laser eye surgery for myopia correction.
The effects of the economic downturn began showing in the laser vision correction market as early as November last year. Companies like Advanced Medical Optics Inc. and other service providers in the eye care industry were affected during 2008.

*The laser eye market reflects the broader medical laser industry. While the myopia correction segment is shrinking, laser surgery remains relatively stable. Coherent’s Genesis 577 laser, used for treating age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a good example.*
**"People are always sick..."**
Despite the economic challenges, the laser surgery segment in the medical field remains more resilient. These procedures often qualify for insurance coverage and don’t require waiting for an economic recovery. For example, the cataract surgery market continues to perform well, with a steady increase in related services and products.
Coherent recently launched a yellow laser based on diode-pumped technology, designed for treating age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other fundus diseases. AMD, caused by retinal hemorrhage, leads to blindness in many Western countries. According to the National Institute of Ophthalmology, 1.75 million Americans had AMD in 2004, and this number is expected to rise to 3 million by 2020.
Laser coagulation, which uses lasers to seal blood vessels and treat conditions like retinal detachment, has been around for over 30 years. Initially, a 514 nm argon ion laser was used, later replaced by a 532 nm Nd:YAG laser. Now, a 561 nm Nd:YAG laser is being used, as it aligns closely with the absorption peak of hemoglobin at 577 nm.
A new generation of optically pumped semiconductor lasers emitting at 577 nm has been available for about 18 months. Lasers that don’t match the absorption wavelength can cause patient discomfort.
“Such lasers have a very promising future,†said Matthias Schulze, marketing director at Coherent. He noted that many ophthalmology manufacturers have adopted these lasers, though this doesn’t mean the entire market will grow rapidly — only certain segments remain stable.
**Highlights in the cosmetic field**
While the cosmetic laser market faced a contraction similar to the myopia correction sector, some areas are still growing or maintaining stability. These include hair removal, skin whitening, and body contouring.
According to a survey by the American Society of Plastic Surgery, 62% of respondents reduced their cosmetic spending in the first half of 2008, while 73% reported that non-invasive cosmetic procedures remained stable.
Dr. Richard D’Amico, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgery, explained that many people are opting for less invasive procedures due to economic pressures. “They prefer to delay more expensive surgeries until they can afford them.â€
In addition, increasing awareness of beauty risks has led to more demand for non-invasive options. After high-profile cases like Kanye West's death from liposuction complications, more people are choosing safe, affordable alternatives like non-surgical facelifts.

*Bauman Medical Group recently installed a laser scanner from Erchonia Medical for non-invasive body contouring and liposuction alternatives.*
Cultural factors also play a role. Americans place a strong emphasis on physical appearance, and even during a recession, many seek low-cost beauty solutions.
**The Laser Beauty Market**
It’s hard to find a market untouched by the economic slowdown, especially those considered optional. However, medical device companies can find opportunities in non-invasive technologies. Gaurav Rohatgi of Continuum is developing a laser treatment device for skin infections, and he believes the trend is far from slowing down.
The debate over which type of laser to use in these devices continues. “Medical lasers are still highly specialized, and we just need to tailor them to customer needs,†he said.
Experience shows that equipment should be designed for trained professionals rather than novices. Each state has strict regulations regarding training requirements for laser operators, and many lasers are only allowed to be used by doctors.
“You have to consider all the costs, and these are key limiting factors in the market,†Rohatgi added.
Laser treatments can also reduce overall treatment costs, making them attractive for both providers and patients. “The doctor’s income model influences how lasers are used in this market,†he pointed out.
Moreover, consumers are becoming more cautious about long-term risks, such as UV exposure, which is why Rohatgi avoids using UV-based equipment.
**Will the recession become a good thing? Yes, a bit**
According to a recent survey, 73% of professional women believe that being young and beautiful can help them find jobs or advance in their careers, especially during a recession. Thirteen percent of respondents said they are planning plastic surgery to gain a competitive edge, and 3% are already undergoing procedures.
One example cited in the study is an insurance broker who used fat transfer techniques to enhance her facial features. She said, “When you look good, you feel confident, and that helps you stand out in the workplace. Clients start to trust you more.â€
