Why is the fruit "colorful"?

Why are the fruits colorful? Which color of fruit loves "wandering"? Which color of fruit loves "home"? Why is the fruit near the equator "black"? Chinese and American scientists have uncovered these secrets through joint research. The results were recently published in the international journal Global Ecology and Biogeography.

The first author of the paper, Lu Lu, an associate researcher at the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that colorful fruits are very eye-catching in nature. They are colored because of rich pigments such as carotenoids, anthocyanins and flavonoids. These pigments are combined in different proportions and interact with complex environments to form a variety of colors.

The scientists chose the Rhododendron white-bead tree plant as the research object.

The Baizhushu is a close relative of blueberries that everyone eats. There are about 280 species in this family, ranging from 0 meters above sea level to 400 meters of subtropical rainforest to 4,500 meters of alpine meadows. Its fruits are white, red, blue, purple, black, and colors that are deepened or lightened on the basis of these five colors.

"A family can be distributed in the Pacific Ocean, and the color of the fruit is high, which has caused us curiosity about its fruit color, diffusion and differentiation, and geographical distribution." Lu Lu said.

The Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the University of Arizona and the Texas Institute of Botany, collected various materials and information from the Baizhushu community throughout the Pacific Rim, and obtained some interesting results.

The red fruits are most willing to "go far away", they are willing to spread to many places, but the red fruits are mostly "only children" families, few brothers and sisters; blue and purple fruits love "home", they are happy to be near the home Children, so there are many family members, but it is not easy to spread and spread to many places; white fruits may be whitening products of red or blue-purple fruits.

The researchers also found that the closer to the equator or the higher the altitude, the more blue-violet fruits and the darker the fruit.

This achievement reveals the relationship between plant diffusion and fruit color, and finds key evidence for the formation of large-scale geographical distribution patterns of species circulation.
