To ensure a healthy start for ducklings, it's essential to prepare the brooding area and feeding equipment properly. Two days before bringing the ducklings into the brooding room, disinfect the space using a 10% to 20% lime water solution. This helps eliminate harmful bacteria and creates a safer environment. The feeding tools should be thoroughly cleaned and then left in direct sunlight for 3 to 5 days to naturally disinfect them. Make sure everything is completely dry before use, as sunlight not only cleans but also helps prevent disease.
Maintain the temperature of the brooding chamber at 20°C or higher. If the ambient temperature drops below this, use a coal stove or another heating source to keep the area warm. In a greenhouse setting, it’s best to raise ducklings in small groups—ideally around 40 ducklings per group. After about a week, they can be gradually moved into larger groups to encourage social development and reduce stress.
Ducklings typically begin eating and drinking 24 to 36 hours after hatching. Before offering food, provide them with clean, warm water to help stimulate their appetite. You can feed them cooked rice that has been washed and made slightly sticky, or use commercial duck pellets. From day 15 onward, feeding can be done three times a day during daylight hours, and you can gradually reduce the frequency as they grow.
By the third day after hatching, ducklings can be introduced to shallow water for short periods. This helps them develop swimming skills and get used to water. Initially, they should be allowed to bathe twice daily, and from the fifth day, they can have access to water for three to four sessions a day. Always make sure the water is clean and not too deep.
For disease prevention, it's crucial to maintain a clean and dry environment. Ensure the duck house and outdoor areas are well-drained, and regularly replace bedding materials. Clean and disinfect food and water troughs daily to avoid contamination. Keep the house well-ventilated and at a comfortable temperature. Regular cleaning, including removing droppings promptly, will help prevent the spread of illness and promote the overall health of the flock.
