To ensure a healthy start for ducklings, it's essential to prepare the brooding area and feeding equipment properly. Two days before bringing the ducklings into the brooding room, they should be disinfected using a 10% to 20% lime water solution. The feeding tools must be thoroughly cleaned and then left in direct sunlight for 3 to 5 days to take advantage of natural disinfection. Make sure everything is completely dry before use to maintain hygiene.
The incubation chamber should be kept at a temperature of at least 20°C. If the ambient temperature falls below this, use a coal stove or another heating source to maintain warmth. In a greenhouse setting, it’s best to raise ducklings in small groups—typically around 40 per group. After about a week, they can be gradually moved into larger groups to encourage social development.
Ducklings usually begin eating and drinking within 24 to 36 hours after hatching. Before offering food, provide them with warm water to drink first. You can feed them cooked rice that has been washed and made sticky, or use commercial duck pellets. From day 15 onward, feed them three times a day during daylight hours only.
By the third day after hatching, ducklings can be introduced to water. Allow them to swim briefly, and if they get wet, dry them off with a towel. From the fifth day onwards, let them drink water 3 to 4 times daily to help them adapt to their environment.
For disease prevention, it's crucial to keep the duck house and outdoor areas well-drained and dry. Regularly change the bedding material and clean the floor. Food and water troughs must be washed and disinfected frequently. Ensure good ventilation in the housing area and maintain an appropriate temperature. Always clean the duck house regularly and remove droppings promptly to prevent the spread of illness.
