Egg feeding goose nutrition needs and feed

Geese require a higher intake of nutrients, particularly energy, protein, calcium, and phosphorus, due to the continuous demands of egg production and reproduction. If the nutrient supply is inadequate or imbalanced, it can lead to reduced egg weight, lower egg production, loss of physical traits in breeding geese, and delayed moulting. Therefore, it's crucial to fully consider the nutritional needs of laying hens. In China, geese are mostly raised in extensive systems, with grazing being common in the south and commercial feed serving as a supplementary source. As a result, there are currently no standardized feeding guidelines for geese in China. Most feed formulations for egg-laying geese are based on foreign standards, adjusted according to local feed resources and the specific nutritional requirements at different growth and production stages. Under a mainly grazing system, it is recommended that the nutritional level of the diet for laying geese should include: metabolic energy between 10.88–11.51 MJ/kg, crude protein ranging from 15% to 16%, crude fiber between 8% to 10%, lysine at 0.8%, methionine at 0.35%, cystine at 0.27%, calcium from 2.2% to 2.5%, phosphorus at 0.65%, and salt at 0.5%. Incorporating an appropriate amount of green and juicy feed into the diet of laying geese can significantly enhance their reproductive performance. Both domestic and international practices have shown that feeding goslings with fresh, leafy greens has a positive impact on the fertility and egg production of female geese. Additionally, adding a small quantity of high-quality hay powder to the diet of laying hens can also improve their overall breeding performance. It’s important to provide a separate mineral feed tray for breeding geese so they can freely consume minerals, especially calcium, to meet their dietary needs. Geese also require a significant amount of water for both drinking and metabolism. Laying geese tend to drink as much water at night as they do during the day, so it’s essential to ensure they have access to sufficient water throughout the night. In northern China, where early spring brings cold temperatures, water sources can easily freeze. Drinking ice-cold water can negatively affect egg production. To prevent this, warm water at around 12°C should be provided, and it’s advisable to replace the water once in the evening to avoid freezing and ensure geese stay hydrated and healthy.
