How to manage the egg goose

During the laying period, geese should be fed a balanced diet with a combination of formulated feed and grazing. The diet should consist of approximately 60–70% cereals, 10–15% cake meals, 10–15% bran, 10–15% fillers (such as grass flour), and 4–5% mineral supplements. In addition to free-choice green feed, each adult goose should receive about 150–180 grams of feed per day, while goslings get 100–130 grams. Feeding should occur three times daily, with a focus on consistency and proper portioning. Start with coarser feeds and finish with finer ones to support digestion. Grazing should begin in the morning and continue until 10 a.m., followed by feeding in shaded areas near water for rest. At around 2 p.m., provide another feeding session, and after 3 p.m., allow grazing again. Finally, offer the evening meal after the third feeding to ensure full satiety. In terms of management, geese during the laying period tend to move more slowly, so it’s best to guide them gently while grazing. Avoid steep slopes and uneven terrain to reduce the risk of internal bleeding or peritonitis. Collect eggs regularly, and if you notice geese that are not following the group, vocalizing excessively, or showing signs of nest-seeking behavior, they may be preparing to lay eggs. In such cases, bring them back to the shed or house to encourage controlled egg production. Pay special attention to young hens in the early stages of laying to prevent them from laying eggs in the wild or underwater. The daily light exposure for laying geese should be at least 13 hours, increasing to 15–16 hours during peak egg production to stimulate reproductive activity. To improve the fertilization rate of eggs, it's important to meet the nutritional needs of breeding geese and maintain an appropriate male-to-female ratio, ideally between 1:5 and 1:10. A suitable water source is essential, along with a moderate-sized aquatic area. For every 100 geese, there should be a water area of 40–60 square meters. Male geese can be aggressive, especially during morning and evening mating periods, so it’s important to separate them when necessary to prevent injuries. Male geese typically live for 3–4 years, so it’s advisable to cull older males annually and replace them with younger ones to maintain a healthy breeding population.
