How to preserve sesame seedlings in summer

To ensure a successful harvest of summer sesame, it is crucial to properly sow the seeds during the summer season. However, the environmental conditions during this period can be challenging—extreme heat, unpredictable weather, and sudden droughts or heavy rains can all negatively impact seedling survival. In dry conditions, the young plants may be "killed" by the heat, while excessive rain can cause waterlogging and lead to "smothering" of the seedlings, resulting in poor germination. To address these challenges, a double seeding method is highly recommended. This technique increases the chances of achieving a full stand of healthy seedlings. For mechanized sowing, 0.7 kg of seeds per acre are used, with a 24-row seeder. Half of the rows (12) are sown at a deeper depth of 3–4 cm, while the other half (12 rows) are sown shallowly at 0.2 cm. Before sowing, two rounds of broadcasting are performed to ensure even distribution. For manual sowing, the field is prepared as usual with proper soil leveling and fertilization. After raking the furrows and ensuring a fine seedbed, 0.6 kg of seeds are sown at a depth of 2–3 cm. Another 0.5 kg of seeds are then broadcast on top, followed by immediate light treading to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. This dual approach offers a form of insurance against adverse weather. If the surface seeds fail due to drought or high temperatures, the deeper seeds can still germinate and emerge successfully. Conversely, if heavy rainfall causes waterlogging that suffocates the deep-seeded plants, the surface seeds will have a better chance of surviving and establishing themselves. By using this method, farmers can significantly improve the likelihood of obtaining a dense and uniform stand of seedlings, which is essential for achieving higher yields of summer sesame. This strategy not only enhances resilience but also lays a solid foundation for a productive growing season.
