Pomegranate tree flower and fruit management

The pomegranate tree is entering the critical phase of flowering and fruit set. Proper management during this period is essential for maximizing yield and fruit quality. Here are some key practices to follow:

1. Flower Thinning. During the transition from bud to bloom, all bell-shaped flowers should be removed to allow only tubular and gourd-shaped flowers to develop. If there are sufficient gourd-shaped flowers, remove any extra ones to ensure the best potential for fruit formation. It’s also important to retain 3 to 5 healthy vegetative shoots with more than 100 leaves around the fruiting branches. This process should be repeated 2 to 3 times throughout the flowering season to maintain optimal conditions.

2. Flower Retention. In the early stages of flowering, applying foliar fertilizers and growth regulators can significantly improve fruit set. Solutions such as 0.2% urea mixed with rare earth micro-fertilizer, 0.3% to 0.5% borax, 0.3% to 0.5% potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and 50-100 ppm gibberellin are highly effective. These treatments help strengthen the flowers and increase their chances of developing into fruits.

3. Fruit Thinning. The general rule for fruit thinning is “leave more, leave two, leave none.” Before and after mid-June, remove small or weak fruit buds from double fruits, leaving only the larger, healthier one. If the tree has insufficient fruit, it's better to remove all fruits and focus on growing a few large, high-quality ones. Additionally, always remove diseased, infested, or deformed fruits and bury them deeply to prevent the spread of pests and diseases.

4. Fertilization. Applying the right type and amount of fertilizer is crucial for supporting the tree during flowering and fruiting. Young trees may require different nutrient ratios compared to mature ones. For trees in the fruiting stage, apply 0.5 to 1.5 kg of compound fertilizer per tree to boost fruit set and weight. Primary fruit-bearing trees benefit most from phosphorus and potassium, while fruit trees need a balanced mix of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium for optimal growth.

5. Branch Adjustment. Throughout the growing season, it's important to prune unwanted branches. Remove any dense shoots that appear in spring, and completely cut back those that emerge in late spring and early summer. Also, eliminate upright branches and any that are affected by pests or disease. This helps improve air circulation, reduce disease risk, and direct the tree’s energy toward fruit production.

By following these steps, growers can ensure a healthier pomegranate tree and a more abundant, high-quality harvest. Consistent care and timely interventions make all the difference in the success of your crop.
