The depth of fertilization of Chinese herbal medicines
When applying seed fertilizer, it's important to prevent fertilizer burn on seeds. The recommended depth for seed fertilizer application is 5-6 cm, and the horizontal distance between the fertilizer and the seeds should be maintained at 3-5 cm. This ensures that the seeds are not directly exposed to concentrated nutrients, which could hinder germination or damage young plants.
During top-dressing, the root systems of medicinal plants have already started to develop. If using mechanical methods for top-dressing, care should be taken to avoid disturbing the roots as much as possible. The fertilizer should not be applied too deep, and the lateral spacing should be appropriate. For narrow-row cultivated medicinal plants such as Poria and Plantago, a top-dressing depth of 6-8 cm with a lateral distance of 10-15 cm is ideal. For wide-row crops like honeysuckle and yellow peony, a deeper application of 8-12 cm with a similar lateral spacing of 10-15 cm is more suitable. These guidelines help ensure even nutrient distribution without damaging the root system.
For base fertilizer application, it's typically done at a depth of 15-20 cm or deeper. One common method is to spread the fertilizer on the soil surface first and then incorporate it into the soil through plowing. Alternatively, the fertilizer can be placed directly into the furrow during the plowing process. This approach ensures that nutrients are available to the plant roots over a longer period, promoting healthy growth throughout the growing season.
In addition to depth and spacing, it's also important to consider the type of fertilizer being used. Organic fertilizers may require different handling compared to synthetic ones, and soil type can also influence the effectiveness of the application. Regular monitoring of plant health and soil conditions can help adjust the fertilization strategy as needed, ensuring optimal growth and yield of the medicinal crops.
