The depth of fertilization of Chinese herbal medicines
When applying seed fertilizer, it's essential to prevent the risk of burning seeds. To achieve this, the fertilizer should be placed at a depth of 5 to 6 cm below the soil surface. Additionally, there should be an appropriate horizontal distance between the fertilizer and the seeds—typically between 3 to 5 cm. During top-dressing, the root systems of medicinal plants have already started to develop. If using mechanical equipment for top-dressing, care should be taken to avoid disturbing the roots as much as possible. The fertilizer should not be applied too deep, and the lateral distance from the plant stems should be maintained appropriately. For narrow-row cultivated medicinal plants such as Poria or Plantago, a top-dressing depth of 6 to 8 cm with a side distance of 10 to 15 cm is generally recommended. In contrast, for wide-row crops like honeysuckle or yellow peony, a deeper application of 8 to 12 cm is more suitable, with a lateral distance of 10 to 15 cm to ensure even nutrient distribution without over-concentration around the base of the plants.
For base fertilizer application, it is typically recommended to place the fertilizer at a depth of 15 to 20 cm or deeper. This can be done by first spreading the fertilizer on the soil surface and then incorporating it into the ground through plowing. Alternatively, the fertilizer can be applied directly into the furrow during the plowing process. This method helps to ensure that the nutrients are placed where the roots can access them most effectively, promoting healthy growth throughout the growing season.
