Australian kangaroo flower

In 2002, four unique varieties of kangaroo flowers were introduced from Australia by the Institute of Biology at the Ningbo Academy of Agricultural Sciences. After nearly two years of dedicated research and cultivation efforts, these plants have successfully bloomed, producing striking flowers that resemble the shape of a kangaroo's paw. This successful introduction has greatly enriched the local fresh cut flower market. However, the variety is still quite rare in China and is considered a high-end cut flower with significant commercial potential. Known as "kangaroo paw" due to their soft, velvety tubular flowers that look like a kangaroo’s claw, these flowers are native to Australia, particularly found in Western Australia. They are perennial herbs with flat, clustered, linear-lanceolate leaves, and can grow up to 90 to 150 cm tall. Each inflorescence features 15 to 20 golden-yellow flowers, which are fluffy and eye-catching. The flowering period typically lasts from spring through summer, making them a long-lasting ornamental plant. Kangaroo flowers thrive best in temperatures between 18°C and 28°C, and they require winter temperatures not to drop below 5°C for survival. Their unique shape and vibrant color make them ideal for private gardens as well as for use in floral arrangements. They are commonly propagated through seeds or ramets, although certain varieties can only be reproduced through tissue culture techniques. With their distinct appearance and adaptability, kangaroo flowers are becoming an increasingly popular choice among gardeners and florists alike. As more people discover their beauty and versatility, their presence in Chinese markets is expected to grow in the coming years.
