Australian kangaroo flower

In 2002, the Institute of Biology at the Ningbo Academy of Agricultural Sciences successfully introduced four varieties of kangaroo flowers from Australia. After nearly two years of research and cultivation, these unique plants have now bloomed beautifully, with flowers that resemble kangaroos in shape. This successful introduction has greatly enriched the local fresh cut flower market. Despite its beauty and potential, the kangaroo flower is still rarely cultivated in China, making it a high-end cut flower with significant commercial value. Known as "kangaroo paw" due to its soft, velvety tubular flowers that look like a kangaroo's paw, this plant is native to Western Australia. It is a perennial herb with flat, clustered, linear-lanceolate leaves, growing up to 90 to 150 cm tall. The long inflorescence typically contains 15 to 20 golden-yellow flowers, which are fluffy and eye-catching. The flowering period lasts from spring to summer, and it thrives best in temperatures between 18°C and 28°C, requiring winter temperatures not to drop below 5°C. With its unique shape and vibrant color, the kangaroo flower is ideal for private gardens and also makes an excellent cut flower. While most varieties can be propagated through seeds or runners (ramets), some specific types require tissue culture for reproduction. Its striking appearance and adaptability make it a promising addition to both ornamental and commercial horticulture in China. As more people become aware of its beauty and versatility, the demand for kangaroo flowers is expected to grow in the coming years.
