Chinese Herbs Prevention and Cure
Pig diarrhea is a widespread and economically significant disease in swine farms, affecting a large number of pigs each year. The disease has a high incidence rate, ranging from 15% to 50%, and can lead to mortality rates between 5% and 35%. Clinically, infected pigs often show symptoms such as fever, elevated body temperature, coughing, and abnormal feces that may appear green, yellow, white, or gray in color.
While pathogenic E. coli is one of the main causes, pig diarrhea is also influenced by multiple factors, including environmental changes, cold stress, and digestive imbalances. These factors can weaken the pigs' immune system, leading to an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the gut. This imbalance disrupts the normal intestinal flora, causing toxin production and subsequent inflammation of the intestinal lining, which ultimately leads to diarrhea.
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the treatment focuses on clearing heat, detoxifying, and promoting digestion. A commonly used herbal formula includes Pulsatilla (50g), Coptis (30g), Astragalus (50g), Qin skin (50g), Honeysuckle (30g), and Forsythia (30g). The ingredients are ground into a fine powder and administered at a dose of 10 grams per day for growing pigs, with treatment lasting seven days. For sows, the same formula is added to their feed daily for three days, resulting in significant improvement in health and recovery.
This TCM approach not only helps alleviate symptoms but also supports long-term gut health, making it a valuable complementary method in managing pig diarrhea.
