Technical advice for changing rice into corn

Applicable area: This technique is suitable for summer drought-prone regions within the maize-growing areas of Sichuan, especially in disaster-affected zones. Due to earthquake-related damage, irrigation infrastructure is limited, so available irrigation sources can include tailwater fields, newly established Tianma fields, and perennial high-yield (high elevation) rainforests. Sowing time and method: The optimal sowing period for replanting corn is before June 5th, with earlier planting being more beneficial. Choosing the right time helps ensure better growth under challenging conditions. Replant corn varieties: It is recommended to use medium-maturity corn varieties that are resistant to leaf spot, sheath blight, southern rust, and have good tolerance to high temperature and humidity. These traits are crucial for the hot and humid climate from June to August. Suitable varieties include Yayu No. 2, Chuandan No. 418, Chuandan 23, Chuandan 26, Chengdan 30, Chengdan 26, and Zhenghong 2. Planting density and fertilizer application: Planting density should be between 3,200 to 3,600 plants per mu. Fertilizer application should be equivalent to 32–34 kg of urea, 30–36 kg of superphosphate, and 10–13 kg of potassium chloride per mu. Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can be applied as a single base fertilizer, while urea application should be adjusted. The ratio of base fertilizer, seedling fertilizer, and tasseling fertilizer has been changed from 30%, 20%, 50% to 40%, 30%, 30% to optimize nutrient uptake. Wide and narrow row planting: Corn should be planted in wide and narrow rows to manage alternating dry and wet conditions during the growing season, particularly when waterlogging is a concern. Typically, six rows are grouped into one car, with a width of 3.6–4.0 meters. Ditches should be 0.20 meters wide and 0.3–0.5 meters deep; in areas with poor drainage, deeper ditches (0.5–0.6 meters) are recommended to reduce flooding and ensure healthy growth. The wide-narrow row spacing is 1.17 meters, with a narrow row of 0.5 meters for better ventilation. Wide rows can also be used to intercrop dwarf crops like soybeans or sweet potatoes, improving light utilization and land productivity. Integrated pest management: High humidity and temperature increase the risk of diseases such as sheath blight, stalk rot, and southern rust. Early control measures include using 20% Jinggangmycin wettable powder at 50 grams per mu mixed with 50 kg of water to manage sheath blight. For leaf spot, 43% Hercules emulsion (15 ml per 50 kg water) or 65% Zeoxin diluted 1,000 times and 50% carbendazim diluted 500 times can be used. To prevent corn borers, mix 50% Rui Jin emulsion (30 ml per 2 kg fine sand), 50% phoxim (10 ml per 5 kg fine sand), or Beauveria bassiana powder (20 g per 2 kg fine sand). Alternatively, 50% dichlorvos or 50% phoxim can be sprayed on the tassels to control pests effectively. Chemical control and prevention: In high-temperature and high-humidity conditions, along with shallow plowing (about 20 cm) in rice fields, it's important to spray 25 ml of Jianxin (approximately 1.5 yuan per mu) mixed with 50 kg of water 7–10 days before tasseling. This helps control plant height and prevent lodging. Additionally, non-alkaline pesticides can be applied for disease control, reducing labor requirements and improving overall crop health.
