Cucumbers with strong fruiting capabilities are essential for high-quality production. To ensure straight growth, hormonal treatments are applied to the inner curved surface of the fruit using a 30 mg/kg gibberellin (90%) solution before and after flowering. Over several days, this treatment helps the fruit straighten naturally.
Once a cucumber begins to bend, a shallow vertical cut is made on the back of the curved part using a sharp blade, followed by one to three cross-cuts. The depth should be around 0.5 cm, and the length between 2 to 5 cm. This method allows the fruit to gradually straighten, and the scars become nearly invisible when the cucumbers are sold.
To support straight growth, small tiles, bricks, or stones (4 cm long and 2 cm wide) are placed near the base of the cucumber when it reaches 10 cm in length. These objects help guide the fruit as it grows, keeping it straight. The materials used are usually fine hemp or plastic ropes, which are gentle on the plant.
Proper management is crucial to avoid bending. If the soil lacks nutrients, planting density is too high, light is insufficient, weeds are abundant, or the soil is too dry, the cucumbers may develop curved fruits. On the other hand, excessive water or nutrients can cause overly vigorous growth, leading to large, misshapen fruits. Therefore, balanced fertilization, moderate watering, and effective pest control are essential to promote smooth fruit development.
To prevent early leaf aging, a combination of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, microbial, and multi-element mineral fertilizers should be used. Organic fertilizer is also beneficial. Applying 20 kg of microbial agents and 20–30 kg of multi-element minerals after flowering helps strengthen root systems, supply nutrients, and prevent leaf decline, reducing the occurrence of deformed fruits. As long as the lower leaves remain green, they should not be removed prematurely.
Controlling the yield per plant is important. An excessively high yield can stress the plant, causing rapid leaf aging and the formation of bent fruits. To prevent issues like pointed or twisted cucumbers, spraying the leaves with Shuofeng 481 (a 0.1% soluble powder) diluted 7000–9000 times, or a 200-times dilution of compound microbial fertilizer, every 7–9 days can significantly improve results.
For mechanical bending, vines should be carefully guided during hanging to avoid blockages that could cause twisting. Any obstacles such as tendrils must be removed to allow natural drooping. Most curved cucumbers result from environmental stress, temperature fluctuations, or weak plants. Once they are no longer growing straight, they typically don’t affect overall yield. Removing them promptly can encourage better growth of subsequent fruits.
