Cucumber bending nine strokes

Cucumbers with strong fruiting ability are essential for high-quality production. Selecting the right variety is the first step in ensuring good yield and straight fruit development. To address natural curvature, a hormonal treatment using 30 mg/kg gibberellin (90%) solution is applied to the inner curved surface of the melon before and after flowering. Over time, this helps the fruit straighten naturally. When a cucumber starts to bend, a shallow vertical cut is made on the back of the curved part using a sharp blade, followed by one to three cross-cuts. The depth should be about 0.5 cm, and the length between 2 to 5 cm. This technique allows the fruit to straighten while keeping the wound almost invisible, making it ideal for market sale. To support straight growth, small tiles, bricks, or stones (4 cm long and 2 cm wide) are placed under the cucumber when it reaches 10 cm in length. These objects help guide the fruit as it grows, gradually correcting any curvature. Proper management is crucial. If the soil is dry, planting density is too high, light is insufficient, or weeds are abundant, the cucumbers may develop bent fruits. Excessive nutrients can lead to overly vigorous foliage, which may result in large, misshapen fruits. Therefore, balanced fertilization, moderate watering, and timely pest control are necessary to ensure smooth fruit development. To prevent premature leaf aging, a mix of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, microbial, and multi-element mineral fertilizers should be used. Organic fertilizer should be applied as a base, and after flowering, adding 20 kg of microbial agents and 20–30 kg of mineral fertilizers can promote root health and nutrient uptake. This helps avoid early leaf decline and reduces the occurrence of deformed fruits. Maintaining the health of the leaves is key to maximizing yield. As long as the bottom leaves remain green, they should not be removed too early or excessively. Removing them too soon can reduce photosynthesis and affect overall productivity. Controlling the number of fruits per plant is also important. An excessive number of fruits can strain the plant, leading to rapid leaf aging and the formation of bent or misshapen cucumbers. Early fruit removal and proper harvesting schedules can help maintain plant vigor. For further prevention, spraying cucumber leaves with Shuofeng 481 (a 0.1% natural canola lactone soluble powder diluted 7000–9000 times) or compound microbial fertilizer (200 times dilution) every 7–9 days can significantly reduce the occurrence of bent or pointed fruits. This treatment should be dissolved in warm water (50–60°C) before application. In cases where mechanical bending occurs, vines should be properly supported and any obstacles, such as tendrils, should be removed to allow the fruit to hang freely. Curved cucumbers caused by environmental stress, temperature fluctuations, or weak plants can still be marketable if corrected in time. Removing these fruits can encourage the growth of straighter ones in the following harvests.
