Growth Habits:

Pueraria montana is a hardy species that thrives in warm, moist environments and is also resistant to cold, drought, and poor soil conditions. It commonly grows in grasslands, shrublands, sparse forests, and along forest edges. Its root system is well-developed, giving it strong vitality and adaptability.

Use of Kudzu:

The use of wild kudzu in China dates back many years, but large-scale artificial cultivation has only gained momentum in recent decades. In 1995, Zhejiang Forestry College initiated research on cultivating non-woodland Pueraria lucidum. Under the leadership of Professor Lou Lunhuan, the team traveled across Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Anhui, and Zhejiang to collect wild seedlings. After extensive selection and experimentation, four high-quality varieties were developed—fast-growing, with high powder extraction rates and easy manual cultivation. These breakthroughs made large-scale artificial cultivation of wild kudzu possible, offering farmers a new way to increase their income and boost agricultural efficiency.

The economic value and future potential of kudzu have attracted growing attention. Among those interested was Song Diquan, who previously ran a pharmaceutical and bottle-closing business. His curiosity led him to invest in kudzu cultivation.

In April 2002, he purchased 20 mu of high-quality kudzu seedlings from Zhejiang Forestry College, and to his surprise, the project was a success. Encouraged by this, he later contracted 300 mu of barren hills in his hometown, Kejia Village, and subcontracted a 200-mu kudzu base in Yiyang Village, Changhua Town, to start large-scale planting. However, to realize real profits, the kudzu needed to be processed into pueraria powder. At the time, there were no professional processing companies in Zhejiang, so Song planned to build a processing plant.

In 2003, after receiving support from the city’s Science and Technology Bureau, Song partnered with Professor Lou to establish a research team combining academic expertise and business capital. They faced numerous challenges in designing, developing, and installing machinery, but eventually succeeded in creating specialized equipment capable of processing 5 tons of kudzu per day. Once the arrowroot powder was successfully extracted, Song didn’t stop there. He learned that Chinese instant foods struggled in European and American markets because they required boiling water, which was not common in those regions. Inspired by this, he spent over two months experimenting and finally developed a cold-water soluble arrowroot powder, filling a gap in the domestic market.

At the Changhua Base, we saw that the kudzu grown in May last year is now larger than a hot water bottle’s neck. It is expected that the yield per mu will reach 7.5 tons next year. With Song Diquan’s 300-mu production base, the total harvest could reach 2,250 tons. Based on a ratio of 1 ton of flour per 5 tons of raw material, more than 450 tons of pueraria flour could be produced, generating an output value of over 135 million yuan. Currently, the city has planted over 600 acres of kudzu, and many farmers are eager to start planting as well. The Municipal Science and Technology Bureau has also launched a plan to cultivate 2,000 acres of kudzu in the near future.
