Adonis amurensis
Also known as cold flower, top ice, or early spring flowers, Adonis amurensis belongs to the Ranunculaceae family and is a member of the Adonis genus. This unique plant is often found in the high-altitude regions of cold mountainous areas, where it thrives in moist, fertile soil. It typically grows in mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests, forest edges, hillsides, road bends, and shrubs.
Morphological Characteristics
Adonis amurensis is a low-growing perennial herb, reaching a height of 20 to 35 centimeters. Its leaves are of type II, and it produces single flowers on the main stem, with a few branches at the top. The plant is known for its dwarf appearance, especially during the early spring when it emerges from the snow. Its golden flowers bloom at the top of the plant, giving it the nickname "Lin Hai Saussurea," which reflects its delicate and elegant beauty.
Cultivation Techniques
Propagation of Adonis amurensis can be done through seeds or root division. Seeds mature between mid-May and early June, and they tend to fall off easily, so timely harvesting is essential. Seeds can be sown in autumn or in spring for flowering the following year. Seedlings grow slowly, and it usually takes about one year for two cotyledons to appear, followed by the development of normal leaves over the years. It may take up to five years before the plant blooms. Root propagation is also effective and can be carried out in spring, summer, or autumn, with late autumn being the most favorable time. Healthy plants with multiple stems or dormant buds are selected, cut into sections, and then transplanted. Each section should include above-ground stems or dormant buds to ensure successful growth.
For potted cultivation, it's recommended to plant densely, especially in late autumn. The potting mix should contain plenty of humus to support healthy growth. When planting, make sure that the dormant buds are level with the soil surface. After planting, place the pots in a shaded, underground area outdoors. Surround the pots with sawdust or broken branches to facilitate easy removal later. If you want to enjoy its flowers during winter, move the pots to a cold room maintained at 0°C to 5°C for 1 to 2 days, then transfer them to a room with temperatures between 15°C and 20°C, placing them in a well-lit area. The plant will begin to sprout and flower within about 10 to 12 days.
Uses
Adonis amurensis is widely used in landscaping, such as in flower beds, walkways, grass borders, and rock gardens. Additionally, the entire plant has medicinal value, known for its ability to clear heat and detoxify the body. Its beauty and utility make it a valuable addition to both natural landscapes and traditional herbal medicine practices.
