Current walnut disease prevention and control technology

In recent years, the problem of black walnuts has become increasingly severe due to pests and diseases such as the walnut limb moth, anthracnose, and black spot. These issues have significantly impacted both the yield and quality of walnuts, causing great concern among farmers. As these three major pests and diseases reach their peak, it is crucial for fruit growers to act promptly and implement effective prevention and control measures.
Regarding the control of walnut limb moth, also known as the walnut black worm, adults typically appear between June and July, with larvae causing the most damage in July. Fortunately, these pests have relatively low resistance to pesticides. Farmers can use non-polluting options such as 10% hydropermethrin EC diluted 1500–2000 times or 15% imidacloprid diluted 3000 times. It's recommended to start treatment at the end of June, and then repeat the spraying every 7–10 days for better results.
For anthracnose and black spot, both are serious diseases that lead to fruit rot and greatly affect walnut production. These diseases are most active during the rainy season, especially from July to August. To prevent them, farmers should apply fungicides before the rainy season begins. Recommended treatments include 50% carbendazim diluted 800–1000 times or 50% thiophanate-methyl diluted 500–800 times. Regular monitoring and timely application are key to effective disease management.
It is essential for local agricultural departments and township governments to provide guidance and support to farmers, ensuring that they are well-informed and equipped with the right tools and knowledge. In Chengde City’s Xinglong County, Shangshidong Township, the local government is actively working to address these challenges and improve walnut production efficiency.
