Rapeseed field management emphasizes on "six defenses"

The flowering period is a critical phase in the growth cycle of rapeseed. Effective field management during this time is essential to ensure healthy development and high yields. To achieve this, it's important to address six key areas that can negatively impact the crop:
1. **Avoid Waterlogging**: As spring progresses, rainfall increases, making drainage a top priority. After the spring season, it's crucial to clear the "three ditches" (main ditch, side ditch, and field ditch) to prevent water accumulation and reduce the risk of waterlogging.
2. **Prevent Nutrient Deficiency**: Rapeseed requires significant nutrients during its flowering stage. If leaves appear yellow or show signs of early aging, applying 15–20 kg of ammonium bicarbonate at the beginning of flowering can help. Additionally, foliar sprays of 0.02% boric acid solution can boost the number of effective branches, pods per plant, and 1000-grain weight. Spraying a 2–3% superphosphate solution during the pod-filling stage can also enhance yield and quality.
3. **Avoid Lodging**: To strengthen the plants and prevent them from falling over, farmers should loosen the soil around the roots and apply growth regulators. A mixture of 30 grams of paclobutrazol (15%) with 25–30 kg of water, evenly sprayed over the field, can improve plant resilience and reduce the risk of lodging later in the season.
4. **Ensure Adequate Water Supply**: During the 30-day flowering period, rapeseed has high water demands. Depending on soil moisture levels, it’s advisable to irrigate 1–2 times to maintain optimal growth conditions.
5. **Control Pests and Diseases**: Early removal of lower leaves improves air circulation and light penetration, reducing disease risk. For sclerotinia and viral diseases, spraying 200g of carbendazim (50%) mixed with 200kg of water, or 150g of the same with 50kg of water, can be effective. In case of locust damage, using 40% dimethoate emulsion diluted 800–1000 times can help control infestations.
6. **Provide Essential Nutrients**: Regular applications of phosphorus, boron, and manganese, or compound organic fertilizers, can support better flowering. A solution made by dissolving 100g of borax in a small amount of hot water and then diluting it with 50kg of water, applied 1–2 times during the bud and early flowering stages, can improve seed set, strengthen grain development, and increase grain weight.
By focusing on these six key areas, farmers can significantly improve the health and productivity of their rapeseed crops during the critical flowering period. Proper management not only ensures better yields but also enhances the overall quality of the harvest.
