The period following peach fruit harvesting until leaf fall is a critical time for nutrient accumulation and flower bud formation in peach trees. Proper post-harvest management directly influences the tree's ability to survive winter and its productivity in the following growing season. Therefore, it's essential for growers to implement effective care practices after the harvest.
Early fertilization should be carried out promptly after the early and mid-season applications. Trees that bore heavy crops should receive fertilizer earlier, while late-maturing varieties should be fertilized before fruit is harvested. The fertilizer should consist of high-quality organic matter combined with balanced nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium compounds, along with essential micronutrients. If there's an autumn drought, timely irrigation is necessary to maintain soil moisture. Additionally, foliar sprays can be used to provide extra nutrients through the leaves.
Leaf protection is also important during this time. Healthy leaves ensure strong photosynthesis, which supports nutrient storage. After fruiting, focus on controlling pests such as peach leaf curl, aphids, spider mites, and leaf miners. A recommended spray mixture includes 50% carbendazim diluted 800 times and 40% dimethoate diluted 1500 times.
Pruning should involve removing crossing, overlapping, diseased, and weak branches within the canopy. A common technique is shortening shoots. Moderate-length fruiting branches should be pruned appropriately to encourage fruiting, while new shoots near the base should be heavily cut back to promote new fruiting wood. This also helps stimulate stronger growth from lower buds.
After harvesting, it's important to cultivate the soil regularly, keeping it loose and free of weeds to a depth of 10–15 cm. Once the leaves have fallen, clear the orchard, remove weeds and fallen leaves, and apply insecticides before burying them under the trees. In areas like Taoyuan, where flat or low-lying land, heavy soils, or dense weeds are common, special attention should be given to improving drainage systems before the rainy season. Lowering the water table and removing weeds helps prevent waterlogging and promotes healthier tree growth.
