First, maintaining the cleanliness of the air tank is essential. The exterior of the air reservoir should be kept clean, and any damaged paint should be repainted promptly to prevent rust and extend its lifespan. Internally, it's important to avoid oil and water accumulation. Every three days of operation, the drain valve at the bottom of the air tank should be opened to release any built-up moisture and oil. If left unchecked, this residue can cause brake failure or prevent the brakes from engaging properly. This occurs because oil and water can travel through the brake lines into the brake valve and air chamber, obstructing the flow of compressed air and ultimately leading to braking issues.
Second, maintaining proper air pressure is crucial. If the pressure is too low, the brakes may not function effectively, increasing stopping distance and risking accidents. On the other hand, excessively high pressure can lead to unnecessary wear on components and potentially damage the air pump or reservoir. The recommended pressure range is typically above 4.5 kg/cm² at startup and no more than 7 kg/cm² during normal driving. If the pressure exceeds 7 kg/cm², you should hear the safety valve releasing air, indicating that the system is over-pressurized.
Third, the trailer’s brakes should engage slightly before the tractor’s main vehicle. Due to the weight and inertia of the trailer and cargo, if both the tractor and trailer brake simultaneously, the tractor could lose control and skid forward. To prevent this, adjust the braking system so that the trailer’s brakes activate just ahead of the tractor’s.
Fourth, ensure all four wheels of both the tractor and trailer brake simultaneously. During high-speed or emergency braking, uneven braking across the wheels can cause sudden swerving or even a rollover. Therefore, it's important to adjust the braking system so that all wheels engage at the same time for balanced and safe stopping.
Fifth, always check that the brakes are flexible and effective. Before starting your journey, inspect the brake lines for secure connections. Test the brakes several times to confirm they respond smoothly and work as expected. When descending long slopes, make sure the air pressure is sufficient. If it’s low, stop and inflate the system until the pressure is adequate.
Lastly, use the correct braking technique. Under normal conditions, slow down first, then disengage the clutch and press the brake pedal to come to a smooth stop. Shift the gear into neutral. In an emergency, quickly apply the brakes while also pressing the clutch pedal. Once stopped safely, shift into neutral to maintain control.
