Centrifugal force calculation formula and method of increasing centrifugal force
The centrifugal force directly affects the efficiency of a centrifuge's separation process. Understanding how to increase this force is essential for anyone involved in centrifuge design or application. Therefore, it becomes necessary to study each centrifuge manufacturer and their approach to optimizing performance.
RCF = 11.2 × R × (r/min / 1000)²
This formula is used to calculate the relative centrifugal force (RCF), where R represents the radius of the rotor, and r/min stands for the rotational speed. From this equation, we can see that there are two main ways to enhance the centrifugal force: increasing the radius of rotation or boosting the speed.
Increasing the rotor's radius—essentially the size of the centrifuge basket—can improve the force, but it also increases the overall volume of the centrifuge, which may not always be practical. On the other hand, increasing the rotational speed is often a more efficient method to achieve higher centrifugal force without significantly altering the device’s dimensions.
Modern microplate centrifuges typically have rotors designed to withstand forces up to 3,000 × g. While increasing motor speed is an effective way to boost centrifugal force, safety remains a top priority. The rotor must be made from strong materials, and the centrifuge casing should be constructed with thick steel (at least 3mm) to ensure structural integrity. Additionally, a reliable damping system is crucial to minimize vibrations and protect both the equipment and the samples being processed.
